If youre a vegetarian or vegan and youre going to spend some time in Georgia, youve come to the right place. This page lists locally produced or imported vegetarian and vegan products available in Georgia, and also offers some general information on Georgian vegetarian cuisine.
Most of eateries in Tbilisi and in other large cities of Georgia offer vegetarian and some vegan dishes. Here are the most popular ones:
- Khachapuri, traditional cheese pie
- Pkhali, finely chopped beet leaves, beans or spinach mixed with the walnut paste, pomegranate grains and various spices
- Fried mushrooms, usually cooked on clay frying-pans "ketsi"
- Eggplant the walnut paste seasoned with vinegar
- Vegetable and fruit pilaw
- Kidney beans
- Various salads, including raw cabbage salad with walnuts
- Curds or cheese dumplings
- Matzoni, something between yoghourt and sour cream
If you want to avoid the hassle of visiting one eatery after another in search of vegetarian food, go to Lotus the first and only vegetarian café in Tbilisi. Lotus offers both traditional Georgian and oriental dishes, and is the only place in Georgia where you can have traditional Georgian meat-based dishes made of meat substitute. - Vegetarian butter, curds and mayonnaise produced by Tserovani, the first company to manufacture dairy substitutes in Georgia. - Veggieburger and Vegetarian Cutlet soy-based meat substitutes. Made in Ukraine with US technology. Available only at the Railway Station open market.
- Soy drink powder manufactured by a Russian company Assoy <http://www.assoy.ru>. Available only at Edelweiss drugstore (Tel: 94-17-55) at the Railway Station small market (also known as Passage 2000).
